MODAL AUXILIARIES

Modal auxiliaries has many different functions, modal auxiliaries used in this study include: will, can, may, shall, dan must ( have to). In general, two forms of Modal Auxiliaries have the following.

Present----------Past
Will---------------Would (used to)
Can---------------Could
May--------------Might
Shall--------------Should (ought to) (had better)
Must (have to)----Had to


1. CAN be used to reveal activity that shows:
a. Ability of the current (present) or in the future
EX: He can speak English very well.

b. Permission (to be allowed to) the current (present) or future
EX: You can go to the mosque tonight.

Modal Auxiliary can also be used in negative sentences by adding words “not” after auxiliary can.
EX:
  • He cannot recite Qur’an well.
  • You cannot eat haram foods.
While asked to form sentences that require a yes or no (interrogative) by placing Modal auxiliary can in front after that followed by the subject:
Ex: Can you write your name in Arabic?
